Chronology of the Parish of Bobcaygeon

Thomas Need set aside
3 acres for Church. |
1850's |
Services were held in homes and halls in and around Bobcaygeon. |
1859 |
St John’s Church built in Dunsford (Sherriffs Corners) Wooden - value $700. |
1860 |
The faithful grew in numbers and started a well organized congregation served by clergy from Fenelon Falls & Lindsay. |
1863 |
Land for church was deeded to Synod
of the Diocese |
1868 |
Congregation of Bobcaygeon was listed as under the mission of Fenelon Falls. |
1869 |
Bobcaygeon (and St. John’s) was established as a mission Parish, a resident incumbent to be in charge. The Rev. Charles W. Patterson became resident incumbent and lived with Boyd’s until 1872. |
1869-70 |
Plans for the church were drawn by Mr John Belcher of Peterborough at no charge. |
1870 |
Mossom Boyd was elected Chairman of Building Committee and construction of Christ Church began. First wardens of the congregation were W.B.Read and W.E Sherwood. |
1870 |
Mrs. Mossom Boyd (Lelitia McGee Cust) laid the corner stone of the church. The first service in the unfinished church was Xmas Eve 1870. |
1871 |
The building of Christ Church was completed and dedicated by Bishop Bethune. The church bell arrived late in 1871. The ornamental Iron Cross over the entrance was stolen but found years later in a barn and restored to its place. |
1872 |
The first Rectory was built, also designed by John Belcher to harmonize with the church. (Board & Batten) The Pattersons take up residence. |
1873 |
Organizations of Church were formed. Mrs Boyd organized first choir and with Miss Smart were organists for years. |
1874 |
First Confirmation was held by Bishop Bethune. Annie Devitt was among the candidates. Rev. Charles Patterson ended his Incumbency. |
1881 |
Both Christ Church and St. John’s consecrated Sept 13, 1881 and the buildings were free from debt at this time. Mrs. Mossom Boyd died 3 months after the service of consecration which she did attend. |
1882 |
The Rev. Avant who had been ill with typhoid returned to the rectory from his sick bed with the Boyds and on Christmas Eve he died alone in the Rectory. |
1900 |
The envelope system was organized for Christ Church by Dr. H.O.Boyd, a distant cousin of Mossom Boyd. |
1900 |
Parish of Bobcaygeon became self
supporting. |
1904 |
First train to Bobcaygeon linked
to St. John’s. |
1906 |
Christ Church was raised 3 ½ feet mainly to accommodate a new furnace in the basement. No damage was done and Dr. H.O.Boyd was congratulated for his organizing of the raising. Windows were taken out and stored so they wouldn’t be broken. |
1907 |
Parish Hall was built from plans again drawn by John Belcher. |
1908 |
Choir vestments were made & used for the first time on Easter Day. |
1909 |
Rectory raised also to accommodate a furnace. Plumbing and a bathroom were added. |
1912 |
The first cross was placed inside of Church. It was made from wood and replaced by the Brass one now in use. |
1914 |
Mr. Mossom M Boyd died and was buried in the family plot in Little Lake Cemetery, Peterborough. |
1919 |
In Nov. a flu hit Bobcaygeon and there were no services for 2 Sundays. |
1920 |
The Rev. T.R.Haughton, rector until 1927 was the first to use a motor car in his job. |
1927 |
The old rectory was torn down and new one erected. It was not designed by J. Belcher and cost $8,500. |
1931 |
Diamond Jubilee of Church was celebrated. |
1935 |
Parish Hall was restored.
